Briinn (Brno) was the capital of Moravia, with an estimated population of 288,000 in the early 1940s. It lies at the confluence of the Schwarzawa and the Zwittawas Rivers.
Among the more interesting pre-war buildings were the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, built in the fifteenth century; St. James, a Gothic church; the Museum of Industrial Arts, and a polytechnic institute. Briinn dates back to the ninth century, and has stood some famous sieges.
