Gauleiter Simon took over the civil administration of Luxemburg in 1940, and was a Reich defense commissioner as of 1942. In early September 1944 the Allies liberated Luxemburg, but by the end of 1944 it was again briefly a battleground during Germany’s Ardennes Offensive.
In April 1945, as the war in Europe was coming to an end, Gustav Simon committed suicide. The grand duchess returned with the government-in-exile, and national sovereignty was again established.
