“Many attempts have been made through the centuries to define what to be German really means. I would not seek to give an explanation in the first instance. I would rather state a law—a law previously expressed by a great German: ‘To be a German is to be clear.’ That means that to be German is to be logical and true. It is the spirit which has always lived in our people, which has inspired sculptors, painters, architects, thinkers, poets, and above all, our musicians.”
