Saarbriicken, on the Saar River on the Franco-German border in Rhenish Prussia, had a population of 129,085 in 1938. Situated in a coal mining region with large iron works and glass factories, it was assigned to France and its territory placed under administration of the League of Nations by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. It was returned to Germany by plebiscite in 1935
