Halle-on-Saale, in Prussian Saxony, attained commercial importance in the eleventh century, and during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries was a member of the Hanseatic League. From 1806-14 it became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia. It was restored to Prussia by the treaty of Vienna. The library in Halle Universitat contains over 350,000 volumes and many thousand manuscripts.
The population of Halle-on-Saale was approximately 210,000 in 1944.
