The Fuhrer at the Westerplatte, the “Schleswig-Holstein” in the background.
The war with Poland began 1 September 1939 with bombardment from the battleship Schleswig-Holstein. In December 1944 the venerable battleship succumbed to bombs and settled on an even keel in Gotenhafen on the Gulf of Danzig. The crew stubbornly manned their guns for another month before abandoning ship.
