The Fuhrer at the Westerplatte, the “Schleswig-Holstein” in the background.
The war with Poland began 1 September 1939 with bombardment from the battleship Schleswig-Holstein. In December 1944 the venerable battleship succumbed to bombs and settled on an even keel in Gotenhafen on the Gulf of Danzig.
